English in Toronto

Why learn English in Toronto? – Toronto is the beating heart of the Canadian economy and the largest city in the country. From the gleaming skyscrapers on Yonge Street to centre ice at the Air Canada Centre, Toronto is pulsating with life. Though the cheers for the Maple Leafs will be shouted in many languages, the majority will resonate in English. English is the lingua franca of this melting pot city and the thread that weaves through its many neighborhoods and diverse cultures.

According to Toronto's 2016 Census, there are 2.5 million native English speakers living in the city, fulfilling an English learner’s dream for cultural immersion. If you are visiting Toronto as a tourist and heading for places like the CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, or Rogers Centre, taking English classes in Toronto will greatly improve your experience. Knowing the language of the place you are travelling to means feeling confident in all the sightseeing you might be planning and makes navigating the airport, public transport, and your accommodation of choice much more seamless. From the Toronto Film Festival in September to Toronto Pride in June, there are hundreds of events taking place in Toronto all year round that you will enjoy all the more for being able to speak English.

By learning English, it isn't just your travel horizons that are broadened. Whether it's here in Toronto where, according to a 2018 study, English is the language of work for an estimated 1.5 million people, or for employment opportunities overseas, English is an incredibly important tool in your skill set, improving your job prospects wherever you go. If you are making Toronto your home, then learning English is a great way to help you fit in and feel at ease. Toronto is a vibrant, diverse place to both live and travel. Speaking English will help you become a part of the thriving social, cultural, and professional networks we enjoy here no matter how long you are staying.

For French-speaking Canadians coming to Toronto for employment, you join a community of around 35,000 who speak French at home, and around 6,000 who use French for work.
