Italian in Vancouver
Vancouver is considered to be one of the most liveable cities in the world, full of things to see and do. Settled over 125 years ago and built by people from all over the globe, Vancouver is an ethnically and linguistically diverse city, with around half the population speaking a language besides English. Among these languages is Italian, recorded by the American Survey Community in 2017 to be spoken by around 15,000 people as a first language, which comprises around 4% of the population. This Italian community has helped to form part of the cityscape, settling in the Strathcona district and the northern Commercial Drive area, lovingly deemed as Vancouver’s “Little Italy”. There are plenty of reasons to learn a language but taking Italian lessons in Vancouver is especially meaningful for those who want to connect with their heritage or to learn more about this modern-day city’s Italian history.

This is possible in Vancouver, where there are cultural activities and events going on all year round to celebrate Canada’s close ties with Italy. Several are hosted by the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver, which opened in 1977 to promote Italian culture, values and heritage and to share these with other communities. From banqueting facilities to cultural activities, this organization aims to keep the Italian community alive and active. The Centre even hosts an annual Italian film festival that showcased 90 of the best films in Italian cinema in 2017 and is growing every year. Take advantage of this opportunity to put into practice what you learn with us at Language Trainers and sharpen your Italian listening skills while enjoying great movies!
For Social: If you would like to further practise what you learn with us at Language Trainers, it is a good idea to join the Vancouver Italian Language Meetup Group. This Italian conversation group is open to all language abilities, from beginner to advanced speakers, so don’t be shy and put your new language skills into play while having a good time! After a meeting, if you want to immerse yourself in even more Italian, you can head out with your new friends to the annual festival called Italian Day on the Drive, held on Commercial Drive, where some of the best Italian films of the year are screened at the Rio Theatre. Each year, the festival uses a different theme under which all things Italian are celebrated, from food and fashion to vehicles and music. Whatever your interest may be, there is something for you and people to meet with similar Italian interests!
