Italian in Vancouver

Why learn Italian in Vancouver? Vancouver is known as one of the most beautiful and liveable cities in the world, full of things to see and do. Settled over 125 years ago and built by people from all over the globe, Vancouver is both an ethnically and linguistically diverse city, with around half the population speaking a language besides English. Among these languages is Italian, recorded in 2017 to be spoken by around 15,000 people as a first language, which comprises around four percent of the population. Although quite small in comparison to other language communities in the area, Italian immigrants have helped to form part of the cityscape, settling in the Strathcona district and the northern Commercial Drive area, deemed as Vancouver’s “Little Italy”. There are plenty of reasons to learn a language, but taking Italian lessons in Vancouver is especially meaningful for those who want connect with their heritage or to learn more about this modern-day city’s Italian history.

Since Italy is the cradle of Western Civilization, people choose to learn Italian for all sorts of reasons—anything from wanting to get a better understanding of Italian film and music to finding new ways to appreciate their favourite food. Learning Italian will improve your experience with art history, literature, archaeology, and philosophy. Italian is also the closest language to Latin, and being that 60% of all English words are derived from Latin, not only is Italian one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn, but it's also the perfect bridge to all the other Romance languages. As well as for leisure, people learn Italian for work and business travel. For those who take Italian classes in Vancouver have the potential to get a leg up on their fellow competition; Italy is Canada's 9th biggest trading partner, with bilateral trade between Canada and Italy accounting for almost $10 billion annually! Additionally, Italy is the third largest economy in the Eurozone, is the eighth largest in the world, and is one of Canada's largest global merchandise partners.

In Vancouver, there are cultural activities and events going on all year round to celebrate Canada’s close ties with Italy, Italian, and those of Italian descent. Several are hosted by the Italian Culture Centre in Vancouver, which opened in 1977 to “promote Italian culture, values and heritage and to share these with other communities.” From banqueting facilities to cultural activities, this organization aims to keep the Italian community alive. The Centre even hosts an annual Italian film festival that showcased 90 of the best films in Italian cinema in 2017 and growing every year. Alternatively, if you want to immerse yourself in even more Italian, you can head to Italian Day on the Drive held on Commercial Drive, where some of the best Italian films of the year are screened at the Rio Theatre. Each year sees a different theme under which all things Italian are celebrated, from food and fashion to vehicles and music. Whatever your interest may be, there is something Italian for you.

Taking Italian classes in Vancouver will give you a better understanding of what is happening at all of the events throughout the year. And if you are one of the almost 500,000 Canadians visiting Italy yearly, a course will also give you confidence when you travel, whether you are hitting all the tourist attractions in Rome or taking a break in the romantic city of Venice. Our Italian classes are taught by native Italian speakers, tailored to meet your individual needs, whether you prefer to study one-on-one or in a small group.
