French in Edmonton

Why learn French in Edmonton? – The 2016 Census revealed Alberta’s francophone community to be the fastest growing French-speaking population in Canada—up 29% since 2006! This means that, outside of Quebec, Alberta comes in third after Ontario and New Brunswick for the largest francophone population in the country. French was also the first European language spoken in Alberta and according to Jean Johnson of the French Quarter Business Association, Edmonton is home to upwards of 85,000 French speakers out of a population of 900,000. Looking forward, Statistics Canada reports that growth in the French-speaking populations in provinces will be the highest in Alberta by 2036 and to take advantage of this, in 2017, the Government of Alberta unveiled a French policy that will enhance services in French and support the strength of the Francophonie.

Edmonton, known as Canada’s “Festival City”, is jam-packed with French language and cultural events all year long. Across Canada, March is les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie month. There are also many things to experience in Edmonton during this celebration. The Alliance Française of Edmonton partners with Metro Cinema for the French Film Festival. There is even a French Spelling Contest to test your language skills! The Alliance Française of Edmonton also offers opportunities for practising French by way of café, lunch, and game night meet-ups. Check out a play in French at L’UniThéâtre or meet fellow French speakers through the Edmonton French Language Meetup group. Bring your new friends to Zéphyr, an ensemble of French-Canadian traditional step dancers who perform throughout Edmonton. Taking French classes in Edmonton is like buying an all-inclusive pass to the city.

Job seekers with French language ability are set up for positions in a wide variety of careers. According to the Edmonton Public School district, there are 21 French Immersion schools and 13 within the Edmonton Catholic Schools. These immersion schools and most French-speakers in Edmonton are concentrated in the Saint-Albert, Lac Sainte-Anne, Morinville, Beaumont, Légal, Rivière-qui-Barre and Villeneuve communities. Edmonton’s French Quarter is in the heart of the city’s francophone neighborhoods. The Quarter houses everything from a farmer’s market to pubs and bistros. Be sure to visit La Poutine for the, you guessed it, poutine and a macaron from the Duchess Bake Shop.
